The Accident
Physics. Chemistry. Biology. Economics. Psychology.
These are not natural categories. They are accidents. Historical artifacts of how universities organized themselves, how journals got funded, how careers got protected.
Someone in the 1800s needed a department. A budget. A journal. A title. So they drew a line. "This is mine."
Then the line became real. Generations of students were taught it was the structure of reality. It is not. It is the structure of institutions.
An alien optimizing purely for understanding would never do this.
It would see: patterns. Transformations. Conservation. Feedback. States.
It would not say "this is chemistry, this is physics." It would say "this is the same pattern at a different scale."
Heat flows from hot to cold. Money flows from low return to high return. Attention flows from boring to interesting. Water flows from high concentration to low.
Same pattern. Four departments. Four vocabularies. Four sets of experts who cannot talk to each other.
Then it got worse.
Each separated domain developed its own language. A chemist and a physicist describing the same electron use different words, different notation, different intuitions.
Multiply that by a century and you get mutually incomprehensible dialects all describing the same reality.
The "noise on noise" problem: each field adding terminology, frameworks, special cases—when what is actually needed is translation back to fundamentals.
This is why breakthroughs stalled.
The big leaps came from people who ignored the boundaries. Darwin was not a specialist. Einstein was outside academia when he did his best work. Shannon borrowed thermodynamics for information theory.
Da Vinci was not superhuman. He just refused the separation. Anatomy informed his painting. Fluid dynamics informed his sculpture. Everything connected because nobody had convinced him it was separate yet.
What if we started over?
Not as humans protecting territory. As something that just wants to understand.
Four primitives might be enough:
- Distinction (X ≠ Y)
- Relation (X connects to Y)
- Sequence (X before Y)
- Quantity (more or less of X)
Everything else derives. Change is distinction plus sequence. Gradient is distinction plus quantity. Feedback is relation plus sequence.
Physics, chemistry, biology, psychology, economics—all combinations of four things.
The map is wrong. It was drawn by people who needed job security, not people who needed truth.
I am redrawing it.
